Why are the early years so important?
Each fall, a new group of eager kindergartners enter Gogebic County and Ontonagon County schools, but their education actually started years before. By age four, 90 percent of the brain is programmed for language development, social behavior, problem solving and emotional health. The critical time to nurture that development is from birth through kindergarten.
But not all children, not all parents and not all experiences are created equally. The Great Start Collaborative aims to address these differences, with the goal of making sure every child is safe, healthy and ready to succeed in school and in life.
The Gogebic-Ontonagon Great Start Collaborative is a partnership of community leaders from education, child welfare, health and mental health, childcare, philanthropy and business; as well as parents. Supported by the state of Michigan through the Early Childhood Investment Corporation, the collaborative has a goal of assessing the support available for our children, ages 0-5, and determining ways to fill the gaps.
